Take a step back in time and....

"Develop the Swing You Can Use Forever!"

What happens when you take a 38 year old 15 handicap golfer and allow him to teach his 11 year old how to golf?

Of course, the answer is that you start yet another generation of bogey golfers!  They will learn the same bad habits that have taken their mentors years to perfect.

So how can they learn the right way?

Classic Golf Books

Idea #1:  Watch Tiger Woods swing and try to copy it.

Well that will work alright if you happen to be 6'2", 180 lbs, with long, lean muscles and a natural athleticism the sport hasn't seen since Bobby Jones.

Idea #2:  Pay the local golf pro several hundred dollars for private lessons.

If you can afford it and have a local pro with a solid reputation then by all means this is the correct answer.

Idea #3:  Purchase one of the many online courses available promoting "new age" or modified swings.

People have been trying to for years to find a new way to swing the golf club.  The reality is that same fluid traditional swing that has been around for over 100 years is the easiest way to build a consistent solid swing that will last you a lifetime.

Idea #4:  Let someone else pay for the lessons and learn through them

Imagine being able to stand 10 feet away from the guy paying for the $80 per hour lessons and taking notes.  Even better than that we will take the notes for you!  You will learn:

  • The proper grip

  • Where to place the ball in your stance

  • Proper alignment

  • The take-away

  • The swing arc

  • Shifting your weight

  • Well....you get the idea

So here is our plan:

My son and I have hired Matt Cook, one of the most sought after teaching pros in the Midwest.

We will be going every Tuesday to the Fargo Sports Bubble.  We plan to use the video camera extensively both for the video itself and for the freeze action images similar to what you see in golf magazines.

We will work all the way from the grip and stance through the swing and of course the all important follow through.

Now for the big news Matt sprung on me today!

After telling me I could share the information from my son's lessons, he went to work on a list of keys to successful practice he wants us to follow.  He told me to feel free to share it with all my friends!

Let me share a little about Matt.  He is one of those guys who would help everyone if he possibly could.  He helps with the local youth programs.  He has a true desire to make sure the love of golf spreads to future generations.

A glimpse of what is to come:

My son and I just finished our first lesson with Matt.  I have always been a student of golf.  I have read countless books and magazines and watched many videos.  I figured I have a fairly classic grip and swing.  Big Surprise!

He had me changing my grip slightly and of course since my son, Alan, learned from me, he had the same incorrect grip.  I tried to contradict some of his instructions but he stopped me in my tracks by simply saying "Do you like the way you are hitting the ball now???"

In the words of Bobby Jones from The Rights and Wrongs of Golf:

"With a bad grip he is condemned always to be a "hacker", because the succeeding movements of the correct swing are impossible for a man whose grip varies greatly from the orthodox.  But given a good start, with his hands placed correctly on the club, he will find the rest easier than he might expect."

Ok...so Alan's grip probably didn't vary greatly from the orthodox but he has always tended to let his hands slip apart into more of a hockey swing and with just a few changes from Matt he is on his way to a consistent, powerful grip, giving him the foundation for a good swing.

Matt then went to work on Alan's setup.  Alan has a habit of standing too tall and slouching over the ball (something I have been trying to help him correct for quite a while).  Within a couple minutes and some simple visualization ideas, Matt had him in perfect position.  He stepped to an open spot while Dad got his turn with the pro and started cracking shot after shot straight down the middle.

He has me excited with some great things for both of us to work on before next weeks lesson.  We are off to write our first installment in our series of newsletters to make sure we retain what we have learned.

I hope you will join us on this adventure.
